The short version
- ChalkFam is free, provided "as is", with no promises. It may change, start charging, or stop at any time, with or without notice.
- Download your data regularly, and don't make ChalkFam your only record of important appointments.
- Donations are gifts and are non-refundable, including if ChalkFam changes, stops working or shuts down.
- You can download your data and delete your account, yourself, at any time.
What ChalkFam is
ChalkFam is a family hub: a shared calendar, chores, lists, meals and more, for the grown-ups and kids in one household. It runs in your browser, works offline, and syncs between your family's accounts with end-to-end encryption.
Your account
- One person per account. Each grown-up has their own account, with their own email and password. Please don't share one account between people.
- Keep your password and recovery code safe. They are what unlock your keys. We never have them.
- We can't recover encrypted data without them. If you lose both your password and your recovery code, we cannot open your private items for you, and if nobody else in your family can approve you, your family's data cannot be opened either. The privacy page explains exactly what happens after a password reset.
Your family's data
- It is yours. We don't claim any ownership of what you add, and we don't sell or share it.
- It is encrypted. Your family's data is encrypted in your browser before it syncs. We can't read it.
- You can download it and delete it any time. Settings → Privacy & your data → Download my data gives you a readable copy. Settings → Account → Delete my account (and, for the owner, Delete this family) deletes it straight away.
Acceptable use
- Don't use ChalkFam for anything illegal, and don't store or share illegal content with it.
- Don't try to break into other families' data, get around the security that keeps families apart, or disrupt the service for others.
- If you find a security problem, please tell us (see Contact) instead of using it.
Kids
Accounts are for grown-ups. A parent or guardian creates and manages kids' profiles inside the family; kids don't need, and don't get, their own account, email or password. You are responsible for what your family's kids can see and do on your family's screens.
Free, as-is, no promises
- ChalkFam is free. There is nothing to pay and no card to enter.
- It is provided "as is" and "as available", with no warranty of any kind. That includes no promise that it is free of mistakes, that it suits your needs, or that it is up at any given moment.
- The owner may change, limit, pause, start charging for, or discontinue ChalkFam or any feature at any time, with or without notice.
- There is no promise that ChalkFam will stay available, keep working, stay free, or keep your data stored on our servers.
- We recommend downloading your data regularly: Settings → Privacy & your data → Download my data. A Backup everything file of your own is a good idea too. Each browser you use keeps its own daily snapshots, and the cloud provider keeps backups as part of its service (see the privacy page), but we don't guarantee that data can be recovered.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, the owner of ChalkFam isn't liable for loss of data, missed events or reminders, or any other damages that come from using ChalkFam or being unable to use it. Don't rely on ChalkFam as your only record of important appointments.
Donations
- Donations are voluntary gifts. They don't buy any goods, services, features, support or availability. Every family gets the same app, whether they give or not.
- Donations are non-refundable in all cases, including if ChalkFam changes, stops working or shuts down.
- You can cancel a monthly donation at any time to stop future charges, from the link in your Stripe receipt email. Past donations are not refunded.
- ChalkFam isn't a registered charity, so donations are not tax-deductible.
Changes to these terms
These terms may change at any time. The date at the top of this page shows the latest version. If you keep using ChalkFam after a change, you accept the new terms. The current version is at /terms; the same text is kept in the project as docs/TERMS.md, so every change is in the project's history.
Ending
- You can delete your account any time, yourself, in Settings → Account. It happens straight away.
- We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms, for example ones used to attack other families.
